MBK Shopping Center in Bangkok

Hard to miss

Hard to miss

Along the Sukhumvit – Ploenchit – Rama 1 corridor are plenty of opportunities to spend your hard earned money.  From Central Chidlom to Siam Paragon and then on to MBK shopping center one can shop for days with end.  Practically everything you can think of is for sale.  High-end boutiques?  No problem.  Middle-class sensibility?  Alot of that too.

My recommendation is that you take a trip on the Skytrain to the National Stadium station and visit MBK.  It’s also a short walk from Siam Paragon and the other retails centers nearby.

MBK is a very large shopping center with hundreds of small retail shops offering goods of every sort at very fair prices.  Most people shop for clothing and electronics however many other types of goods are available, from counterfeit luxury watches to 24K gold jewelry.  One could spend an entire day going from floor to floor.

Once you get inside, you will encounter large crowds everywhere.  Sometimes it is a little confusing trying to figure where you’re going with multiple escalators and staircases in several directions but this can be a benefit because it is relatively easy to orient yourself in the building.  I recommend that the best time to go is around 1100am when the crowds have not arrived.

I usually go to MBK to visit Fotofile, a large multi-shop camera shop that I consider one of the top outlets in Asia.  And  I have visited shops all over the world.  There are three Fotofile shops at MBK on the 1st, 3rd and 5th floors, closer to the Skytrain side of the building and towards the front.  I usually shop at the outlet on the 3rd floor but I recommend you also visit the shop on the 5th floor to view a massive collection of Canon photographic equipment.  It’s really of history of Canon and is quite interesting comparing equipment from 40 years ago to now.  Don’t miss it.

Finally, when you’ve had your fill of shopping there are a large number of restaurants in the building.  I recommend the food court, which has enough variety to satisfy anyone in your group.  After you’re through, you can always head to other nearby shopping centers like Siam Center, Discovery Center and Siam Paragon.  Good hunting.
