The floating markets about 75 kilometers southwest of Bangkok are a must see for visitors to Thailand.  Although they have become very touristy, they still show a glimpse of Thailand as it used to be.  The floating markets are centered around Samut Songkhram and nearby Ratchaburi.  The best known to foreign tourists is the Damnoen Saduak market in Ratchaburi.  However, I believe the best floating market is at Amphawa (Samut Songkhram), about 15km south (and closer to Bangkok).  This market is huge and caters to mainly Thai tourists.  When I was there, I only saw a handful of foreigners.

The best time to go is around sunset.  The place comes to life although the throngs of people can be overwhelming.  Some people travel to the floating market at Damnoen Saduak in the morning, then Amphawa early evening.

Twilight time

One can choose to eat from the boats or the numerous restaurants lining the market.  I would also recommend that you consider a stay at one of the small inns that blanket the area.  They are known as “home stay” in Thailand.   Basically they are inns (or bed and breakfasts).  And they are located on the water, both at the market or in the area.  They are reasonably priced.  The one I stayed at cost 1100 thb per night, including a simple breakfast.  Do your research on the “home stays”.  You will not be disappointed.
