Electronics, cameras and laptops at Singapore Changi Airport

Changi Airport can fulfill all your shopping needs.  It has one of the largest duty-free shopping areas in the world.  However, it’s the electronic stuff that I pay attention to.

From free internet, wifi and television viewing areas, there’s enough to keep you busy in the digital world.  But there’s more than than.

Each of the three terminals have several electronics/photo shops that will give you an opportunity to spend your hard earned cash.  As is typical in duty-free areas world-wide, the prices aren’t the best.  You can obtain identical products in Singapore for less money.  And if you spend enough, your VAT will be refunded at the airport.

I recommend that if you’re inclined to buy at the airport that you don’t spend alot of time going from shop to shop comparing prices.  You will find that the prices are identical. That being said, there is always something to buy.

How about a laptop?

  1. Never imagine I would buy a laptop at the airport. Funny!! Really??!!! 🙂

    January 16, 2009 at 8:35 pm

    • Is there any Sony mark of laptops at airport? Can I buy a laptop when arriving at airport or when departing?

      May 4, 2009 at 3:46 am

      • The computer shops at the Singapore Airport do carry Sony and you can buy in the duty free area either arriving or departing. You may be able to get a better deal in Singapore rather than the airport. Check out the price at the airport, then compare against the prices in Singapore. Check out the shops at Sim Lim Square. Can also bargain in Singapore. The airport prices are fixed. Leo

  2. Really, they carry ten or fifteen different laptops including Apple.

    January 16, 2009 at 8:43 pm

  3. Are you kidding?? :O

    January 16, 2009 at 9:40 pm

    • Really. I guess it’s for those transit fliers.

      January 16, 2009 at 9:51 pm

  4. Do the airport stores in Changi have the latest technology? How do they compare with what you find in HKG stores in Kowloon?

    January 17, 2009 at 9:27 am

    • The Changi stores have the latest technology. The variety is very good. The shops at HKG can’t compare. Even the shops at the Bangkok Airport have more than HKG. On the streets, there is also more variety in Singapore than HKG. Pricing can be very similar.

  5. What will be the price for a Canon 5D Mark II (body only) in December, in Changi airport?
Will the warranty work normally, later, in Europe?

    November 15, 2009 at 7:43 pm

    • Marc,

I don’t believe that the airport shops carry the 5D Mk II. At least they didn’t the last time I checked. I will check this out next Monday and let you know if they carry that camera. If you are spending any time in Singapore, visit Cathay Photo, which is the best shop in Singapore. Very reputable. Visit the Marina outlet and ask for Sam. The last time I checked they were selling the 5D Mk II for around 2500 USD. I will visit them next week and let you know the current price. There is also a partial VAT refund for an additional savings. Leo

      November 16, 2009 at 5:13 pm

  6. Leo,

    Thank you so much.
I shall be in Singapore enoough time to visit the store you comment.
I hope they shall have the camera, at a similar price.

    November 16, 2009 at 8:26 pm

    • I’ll let you know what the current price is next week. Also, if you decide to comparison shop in Singapore, be careful at Lucky Plaza on Orchard Road. Some of the shops are not honest. Cheers, Leo

  7. Hi!
Do you know is it possible to find in some of the airport shops lens for Sony DSLR Cameras?
I’m looking for Sony SAL-16F28 Fisheye, my friend will be in Singapore Changi Airport on his way to Bangkok and i want to ask him to buy this lense there… He will not have a lot of time, may be you know exact place?

    December 8, 2009 at 10:09 pm

    • I don’t think that the camera shop at Changi Airport will carry that lens as they carry more common lens. If he had more time in Singapore he could visit Cathay Photo who are unquestionably the best shop in Singapore. That lens should be available in Bangkok. Let me check around and see. Leo

  8. hello,

I am in Jakarta planning to buy Canon500D. Can any body tell me the price of 500D on Singapore airport, as i will have 2 hours transit time their. Where i can get the cheapest, in Jakarta or in the Singapore Airport.

    Please help me.

    December 12, 2009 at 4:16 pm

    • Abhi,

I never found the prices at the Singapore Airport to be very low. In Singapore (not the airport), the shops sell the same camera for less money. I recommend you look around in Jakarta. I have the feeling that the price will be similar and you will get a warranty valid in Indonesia. Good luck.

      December 12, 2009 at 7:21 pm

  9. I am planning to buy a Canon 500D or 450D will it be cheaper in Singapore town or in Bangkok (Thailand)

    December 17, 2009 at 5:37 pm

    • The price difference between Singapore and Bangkok are minimal. Where the difference lies is the larger 7% VAT refund in Thailand. Leo

      December 17, 2009 at 6:07 pm

      • Tax refund in Thailand? what do you mean? To make it more clear:I am living in Thailand and I’d like to know if I better buy a canon while in Singapore and claim a tax refund at Changi airport or just buy it in Bangkok? I can’t remember how much was the 500D and 450D in Bangkok. In Singapore I found the 500D for 950$ (around 22500THB) but the warranty won’t be valid in Thailand

        December 17, 2009 at 6:43 pm

      • HI Ben,

It may be difficult to get a VAT refund if you’re living in Thailand. If you’re holding a non-Thailand passport, it can be done although technically you don’t qualify for the refund if you reside in Thailand 180 days or more. However, the VAT refund office does not cross check your immigration status. You can claim the refund in cash at the airport on your way out.

950 SGD is a good price although I would check in Bangkok with AV Camera, Fotofile and Sunny Camera. Fotofile tends to be a bit higher but will come down. I think you can match the Singapore price in Bangkok or at least get close to it with the VAT refund.

In the worst case scenario, you may pay 26000 thb for the 500D but that local dealer and warranty is very valuable. For example, I bought a D700 earlier in the year from a local dealer. After a couple of weeks, the electronics failed. I took it back to the shop and they replaced it in 15 minutes. Try that with a camera bought abroad. I will buy lenses abroad (if the price is right) as lenses rarely fail however I tend to buy my cameras in Bangkok.

        December 17, 2009 at 7:22 pm

      • Thx Leo, yep i can’t claim a tax refund as I’m holding a Non immigrant B visa (tax refund is for tourist)
So maybe better I buy it in Bangkok There is some place where get get good deal (Zeer shopping mall RANGSIT close to futur park)
I am not sure that the shop in Singapore are license dealer…. if it’s to save on 1 or 2,000THB…. if over than 5,000THB than maybe I think again
        Are you Thai or Singaporean?

        December 17, 2009 at 7:32 pm

      • Ben,

For the price difference you’re better off buying in Thailand. Peace of mind is important. I’m neither Thai or Singaporean. I’m American and have lived in Bangkok for 11 years.

Take care and let me know how your “hunt” ends.

        December 17, 2009 at 10:23 pm

      • The staff at the VAT refund desk never check your immigration status. They verify your passport number, name etc. I suppose there’s always a slight risk they might question your VAT refund request. However I’ve heard of this occurring.

        December 17, 2009 at 10:26 pm

      • Do you have any idea how much is the 500D in Bangkok now? I can’t remember…. I’ll see tomorow afternoon check out some shops in Singapore if I’m not so sure I will wait to be back in Thailand then later on check out in Bangkok, might be cheaper than in Phuket.

Thanks a lot for your help.

        Take care

        December 17, 2009 at 10:53 pm

      • Ben, I don’t have the latest prices however last year a friend of mine bought the 450D and kit lens for 24900 thb in Bangkok. In Singapore I recommend Cathay Photo which is probably one of the best shops in town. They have a branch at Peninsula Plaza and another at Marina Shopping Center.

        Good luck.

        December 18, 2009 at 6:53 am

      • Hi Leo,

I found a good deal at 980S with 8GB, case, user’s guide and warranty. The shop is in Funan digitalLife mall: shop #05-46
        John 3:16
The salesman(owner) was so nice best service ever.
They actually forgot to put the SD card, I contact them by E-mail and they brought the card at my hotel.
For camera at a good price and friendly service this is the place to go.

        December 18, 2009 at 11:26 pm

      • Thats a good shop. Forgot to mention it. Great reputation. I’ve bought a couple of cameras there over the years. Also a thinktank backpack. The price you got is good.

        Take care,

        December 19, 2009 at 12:04 am

  10. Hi Leo,

I am wondering if i can buy a 32inch sony bravia LCD Tv from singapore airport and get it checked in for my connecting flight. I am a little unsure whether I can buy it as the stop over is only for 2 hours. Would it be easier if I pre-order it? Also if it is not too much trouble would you let me know the price range of the LCD tv.

    Thank you

    December 20, 2009 at 5:45 am

    • HI Neha,

Sorry I can’t help as I’ve never looked to see if they had tv’s of that size at the airport. Although I could be wrong, I don’t believe this size would be something they would keep in stock as they would rarely sell sets of this size. And then you would have the headache of trying to check in the televison while in transit. As far as pricing is concerned, I just don’t know. Sorry Neha.

      December 20, 2009 at 10:18 pm

  11. I’m looking to buy a Canon D450 in Singapore Airport while I’m in transit. Is it available? What’s the shop name? What is the price now, and what do you think it would be (approx) in the beginning of January?

Thanks – I’m just comparing prices from Australia and Singapore Airport.

    December 22, 2009 at 9:50 pm

    • If the camera is in stock, the price with kit lens should be around 1000 Singapore dollars. The 450D has been replaced by the 500D so supply should be limited. There is at least one camera shop in each of the three terminals. Each is quite easy to find. Check the map or consult with the information counter.

      Good luck,

      December 22, 2009 at 10:28 pm

  12. Hi Leolaksi,

I’m coming to Singapore in Jan 13, and staying there for 4 days before continuing to Australia.

I’d like to buy a Canon 7D with a lens kit. Do you know how much that would be in Singapore? I’d appreciate some store recommendations.

I’m also looking for Lenovo ThinkPad laptops. Are those cheap in Singapore and are there any second hand stores for laptops?

My third interest is used watches such as Omega. Are you aware of any stores selling them?

    December 31, 2009 at 9:38 pm

  13. I’m looking for Toshiba laptops. Are those cheap in Singapore ?

    February 4, 2010 at 2:35 pm

    • Laptop prices are good in Singapore. However whether they are cheap or not depends on the prices where you live. Cheers, Leo

      February 6, 2010 at 9:26 pm

  14. I want to buy a 50mm f/1.4G in the Changi Airport. Would they have that?

    June 14, 2010 at 7:38 am

    • Phoebe,

I have seen this lens at the Singapore Airport before. It should still be available.

      June 14, 2010 at 8:23 am

  15. Hi Leo,
Can you advise me if there is a Singapore Duty Free website to check the DSLR and lense prices?

I am interested in Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 24-70 f/2.8 USM along with 70-210 f/2.8 USM plus accesories.

    Thanks Jozsef

    J. Danway

    June 21, 2010 at 9:36 pm

    • Hi Jozsef,

There is not a Singapore Duty Free website that lists prices. Also, I have never found airport duty free prices that competitive. You will get a better price in Singapore rather than the airport. And you will also get a VAT refund.

      June 24, 2010 at 4:05 pm

  16. hi,
I am looking for a laptop while i at transit. But I have only one and half hours. Is this time gap enough to do shopping after immigration?
If so can you please tell me names of computer shops at the airport to buy a laptop?

    June 30, 2010 at 11:28 pm

    • there is an electronic shop in each of the three terminals at Changi. Each has pretty much the same selection of laptops. There is also a Sony Shop at Terminal 3. Can’t recall the names of the shops however they can be easily found. just ask the information counter where the computer shop is located. also just wandering around you will find it. the terminal shopping areas are not that exceedingly large. good luck. leo

      June 30, 2010 at 11:39 pm

      • Hi ,
        Thanks for ur reply.
Can u pls tell me whether there are DELL laptops in those shops. Becoz I want to hv a DELL.

        July 1, 2010 at 2:29 am

        July 4, 2010 at 10:40 pm

  17. Hi,
I’m Jennifer and will be transiting in Singapore before my next flight out nxt week. am looking to but a palm top dvd player that can connect to a tv and also for a keystudio 49 midi keyboard. will i be able to find both in the duty free shops in the Changi airport. where can i pick up? how’s the pricing?

    July 4, 2010 at 10:12 pm

    • no problem finding palmtop dvd players at Changi. take a look a the electronics shops located at each of the terminals. the keyboard is a different matter. don’t think you will find it there. pricing is better downtown Singapore. pricing is a bit high but really depends on prices in your country. may be lower. good luck. leo

      July 4, 2010 at 10:39 pm

  18. Are there good shops at the Bangkok International Airport where you can buy a good Laptop ?

    July 21, 2010 at 8:19 pm

    • There are several electronics shops at the airport although I can not recall seeing laptops there.

      July 27, 2010 at 7:18 pm

  19. Hi Leo. I would buy a Fix nikkon lens 50mm F1,4 D. Would it be available in changi? Or should I go to other place in singapore?

    August 29, 2010 at 12:54 pm

    • Hi Inez.

The shops at Changi may not have that lens in stock. And if it is in stock, the cost is not as reasonable as in Singapore proper. Try John 3:16 at Funan Centre or Cathay Photo at Marina Shopping Centre. Remember to collect your VAT refund upon departure from Changi.

      August 29, 2010 at 7:05 pm

      • Oh thanks. I’ll try the store you’ve mentioned. Anyway for apple products, are the price in the airport are just the same as if we buy it from other store outside? And how can I refund the VAT at changi ? Hehe : ) I never do that before.

        August 30, 2010 at 4:36 pm

      • the prices at the apple store are better in Singapore. and the selection is immense compared to the airport. try the apple store at wheelock place on orchard. and no vat refund at airport (but you can ask haha). leo

        September 4, 2010 at 8:19 am

  20. Hi Leo

We are Going to stay In Singapore for 4 days. I plan to Buy Ipad,Iphone and Canon SLR with lenses. Can you advise the best place to shop. Currently how much is the VAT refund and how to claim.

    September 15, 2010 at 7:09 am

    • You might check the Apple Store for the Ipad and Iphone. It’s located at Wheelock Place on Orchard. You could check with the mobile providers however they would require a service contract. Re VAT refund check this out. http://sg.ksdb.com/429414.page Briefly the VAT refund is 5% and you receive the refund at the airport. Make sure you get the proper VAT refund form from the store. Fill it out. At the airport, have customs check out your purchases. There are signs to point the way. If the purchase is checked in, then show them the products before checking in. If the products are hand carry, you can have them inspected after customs. After that, you take the documents to the refund desk and you will get the refund on the spot. There are signs everywhere.

Re camera, check John 3:16 at Funan Centre or Cathay Photo at nearly Peninsula Plaza.

      September 17, 2010 at 4:15 pm

  21. Hello, what is the price range of the laptops available at your store?

    Rosalina Ward

    September 21, 2010 at 8:03 am

    • Rosalina,

Sorry I don’t have a store. You will find the prices for laptops in Singapore competitive with many other countries.

      September 26, 2010 at 6:16 pm

  22. Hi Leo,

My daughter, Che, is out from Seoul to attend the SA Blog awards in Cape Town. She is desperate to buy an iPhone and we would like to get it for her. She isflying back via Singapore airport on Mon 28th. She will have about 3 hours at the airport. It seems as though there is an apple store in the airport. I need to know how many US Dollars to give her to buy an i phone. and will it work in South Korea?
You can check out Che’s blog at http://www.indieberries.blogspot.com we are hoping she will win her categories!

    September 23, 2010 at 4:05 pm

    • Hi Graham,

The iphone 4 is not sold at the airport. You have to travel into Singapore to buy the mobile. And you have to sign up for a service contract. Doesn’t sound like it fits your situation. And yes, it will work in Korea.

      September 24, 2010 at 4:42 pm

  23. Hi Leo,
Can I know where can I get the best deal for panasonic DMC-FT2 and panasonic lumix lx3 05 lx5 in singapore? this is because I’ll only reach singpore changi airport at night, I m afraid I can have a chance to inspect the prices at singpore airport.

    September 25, 2010 at 6:36 am

    • Each of the three terminals at Changi has a camera store and they do carry the Panasonic line. If you are going into Singapore I recommend John 3:16 at Funan Centre. There are several camera shops at Funan so you can comparison shop. Also check out Cathay Photo at Marina Shopping Centre and Peninsula Plaza. Be careful at Lucky Plaza as some camera shops there can be tricky.

      September 25, 2010 at 3:52 pm

  24. hello,

Leo im travelling to changi airport beginning of october and I want to buy the samsung tablet. can you tell me if i can find it yet??

    September 26, 2010 at 6:05 am

    • Hey John. It won’t be available by then. You would be missing it by three weeks or so. Leo

      September 26, 2010 at 6:14 pm

  25. leo
I am hoping to buy a psp 3000 game console from changi airport. would you know where to get 1 and the approx price.
    cheers mate

    September 26, 2010 at 6:51 pm

    • The PSP 3000 is available at the Electronics shops located at each of the terminals. Sorry mate, can’t help you with the price. I don’t find the prices at airports as the best. You might try shopping at Funan Centre in Singapore.

      October 12, 2010 at 4:25 pm

  26. Hi We’re flying into Changi Airport on 02/11/10,staying overnight in Singapore and flying out, onroute to New Zealand, on 03/11/10. My husband wants some night vision binoculars. Can we get some at Changi when we arrive or should we buy somewhere in Singapore. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks Theresa

    Theresa Catterall

    October 2, 2010 at 2:10 am

    • NIght vision binoculars are not available at Changi. I recommend that you visit Funan Centre and see if you can find a shop that will steer you in the right direction. Leo

      October 12, 2010 at 4:23 pm

  27. I would like to buy Memorex or Verbatim Blue ray DVDs 25 gb at Singapore airport. My friend is reaching on October 30 so he can purchase 30 dvds a piece. Pl let me know whether I can purchase at Singapore airport.

    October 15, 2010 at 3:15 pm

    • You should be able to find these DVD’s at the “Electronics” shops at each terminal. You can also try the computer stores in each terminal. And if both shops carry them, they will be the same price.

      October 15, 2010 at 9:44 pm

      • Kindly let me know whether Memorex/Verbatim blank DVDS are available at any of these terminals and what should be the approx price per pack of 30. My friend will be coming to Singapore enroute to Australia on Oct 30 so he can purchase on Oct 30/31 and after a month he will pick up the package from the shop.
Am I right or any other suggestions from you ?

        October 19, 2010 at 10:35 am

  28. Hi Leo

    October 18, 2010 at 8:47 pm

    • Chris,

I would check the shops at Funan Centre. There is also a Challenger superstore there.

      October 31, 2010 at 10:12 am

  29. Will I be able to purchase a sony wide angle lens 737c lens for a camrecorder hdr-sr11 at Changi airport

    October 24, 2010 at 3:10 pm

The prices can change often, however, the range, regardless of brand, is from 600 USD to 2000-3000 USD depending on configuration.

      December 3, 2010 at 5:42 pm

  31. Hi Leolaski

Can you give me an idea about the price for a Canon 5D Mark II (body only) in December, in Changi airport? Looking at travelling in 48 hrs so would really appreciate a response!

    December 6, 2010 at 7:04 am

  32. Hi Leo!

I have a stop over in Singapore on route to Cambodia. I’m British, do I need a visa in order to leave the airport to do a bit of shoping in Singapore?

iI’m looking to buy the new Canon 60D DSLR camera, can you suggest where in Singapore would be best / cheapest for me to purchase one? I’d like to get a good price on the 60D body and a decent couple of lenses.

Many thanks for any info! I leave for Singapore – Cambodia in a few weeks 11/01/2011. Hope you can give me some advice before I go! :o)

  33. Hi Leo

I ve been reading here your advices to many people. Could you maybe give me one about buying a 5d mark 2 from Bangkok? I intend to check AV photo, photofile and sunny camera. I am Turkish and will be in Thailand for a week only. Do I have a chance to get the VAT back from the airport when flying home?

    January 27, 2011 at 4:37 pm

    • I would recommend that you check several shops including the ones you mention. AV has some of the best prices in Bangkok. Sunny at MBK is not bad.  You should also check Fotofile at MBK. Key is to know your prices.

There are shops at fortune tower that sell new gray market cameras from the US. They can be considerably cheaper. We’re talking around 200-300 USD cheaper although the final price may depend on your bargaining. If you buy there make sure they offer vat refund.

Check out Fotofile.net for a good reference point.  AV should be cheaper. And fortune tower even cheaper than that.

You can receive cash back at the airport. Of it you want, they can credit your charge card. And the VAT refund is seven percent. Be sure and pick up the forms from the shop where you buy the cameras.

      Good luck,

      • Hi Leo

Thanks for the quick and rich information. Really appreciated.

If ever pay a visit to istanbul, please send an email beforehand and will try to help any question you might have about here and maybe grab beer together.

    • Occasionally one can find a housing for a camera, however, I wouldn’t plan on it.

  36. Are there any sony showrooms or shops selling sony audio systems at Bangkok International Airport. Do you have their contact numbers?

    • Hi Deepak,

The Bangkok Airport does not have a Sony showroom. The airport electronics shop does sell a few small micro hi-fi systems but I don’t believe they carry the Sony you mention.

  37. Went on vacation in KL and on our way out I saw a Canon Kiosk selling a Canon 550D kit for RM2588 with 1 year warranty at the KLIA airport. When I got to Singapore, I curiously asked a store at the Lucky Plaza and was quoted SGD945. However, I’ve read some horrible stories at Lucky Plaza moreso electronic items. Some reputable stores along Orchard sells the 550D at SGD1199.
Would you happen to know the price of the Canon 550D kit at a trustworthy store you know? I’m from the Philippines, would I get a tax refund at the airport? Thank you in advance.

    • I would recommend that you visit Cathay Photo either at the Marina Shopping Center or Peninsula Plaza. They are reputable and their pricing is good. I also recommend John 3:16 Photo Supplies at Funan Centre Shop. Personal touch and very helpful.

I would not buy at Lucky Plaza unless you know the merchant or your prices. Be very careful there.

Also you will get a tax refund at the airport.
