Sukhothai, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a must-see if you visit Thailand.  Although at some distance from Bangkok, it is easily accessible by air or road.  And there is enough to do there and nearby Phitsanulok to keep you busy for a few days.  The historical significance of both locations is part of the fabric of modern-day Thailand.
