Electronics, cameras and laptops at Singapore Changi Airport
Changi Airport can fulfill all your shopping needs. It has one of the largest duty-free shopping areas in the world. However, it’s the electronic stuff that I pay attention to.
From free internet, wifi and television viewing areas, there’s enough to keep you busy in the digital world. But there’s more than than.
Each of the three terminals have several electronics/photo shops that will give you an opportunity to spend your hard earned cash. As is typical in duty-free areas world-wide, the prices aren’t the best. You can obtain identical products in Singapore for less money. And if you spend enough, your VAT will be refunded at the airport.
I recommend that if you’re inclined to buy at the airport that you don’t spend alot of time going from shop to shop comparing prices. You will find that the prices are identical. That being said, there is always something to buy.
Never imagine I would buy a laptop at the airport. Funny!! Really??!!! 🙂

Is there any Sony mark of laptops at airport? Can I buy a laptop when arriving at airport or when departing?
Daryoush
May 4, 2009 at 3:46 am
The computer shops at the Singapore Airport do carry Sony and you can buy in the duty free area either arriving or departing. You may be able to get a better deal in Singapore rather than the airport. Check out the price at the airport, then compare against the prices in Singapore. Check out the shops at Sim Lim Square. Can also bargain in Singapore. The airport prices are fixed. Leo

Do the airport stores in Changi have the latest technology? How do they compare with what you find in HKG stores in Kowloon?
Grayman
January 17, 2009 at 9:27 am
The Changi stores have the latest technology. The variety is very good. The shops at HKG can’t compare. Even the shops at the Bangkok Airport have more than HKG. On the streets, there is also more variety in Singapore than HKG. Pricing can be very similar.

What will be the price for a Canon 5D Mark II (body only) in December, in Changi airport?
Will the warranty work normally, later, in Europe?
Thanks

November 15, 2009 at 7:43 pm
Marc,
I don’t believe that the airport shops carry the 5D Mk II. At least they didn’t the last time I checked. I will check this out next Monday and let you know if they carry that camera. If you are spending any time in Singapore, visit Cathay Photo, which is the best shop in Singapore. Very reputable. Visit the Marina outlet and ask for Sam. The last time I checked they were selling the 5D Mk II for around 2500 USD. I will visit them next week and let you know the current price. There is also a partial VAT refund for an additional savings. Leo

Hi!
Do you know is it possible to find in some of the airport shops lens for Sony DSLR Cameras?
I’m looking for Sony SAL-16F28 Fisheye, my friend will be in Singapore Changi Airport on his way to Bangkok and i want to ask him to buy this lense there… He will not have a lot of time, may be you know exact place?

I don’t think that the camera shop at Changi Airport will carry that lens as they carry more common lens. If he had more time in Singapore he could visit Cathay Photo who are unquestionably the best shop in Singapore. That lens should be available in Bangkok. Let me check around and see. Leo

Abhi,
I never found the prices at the Singapore Airport to be very low. In Singapore (not the airport), the shops sell the same camera for less money. I recommend you look around in Jakarta. I have the feeling that the price will be similar and you will get a warranty valid in Indonesia. Good luck.

Tax refund in Thailand? what do you mean? To make it more clear:I am living in Thailand and I’d like to know if I better buy a canon while in Singapore and claim a tax refund at Changi airport or just buy it in Bangkok? I can’t remember how much was the 500D and 450D in Bangkok. In Singapore I found the 500D for 950$ (around 22500THB) but the warranty won’t be valid in Thailand
ben
December 17, 2009 at 6:43 pm
HI Ben,
Ben,
It may be difficult to get a VAT refund if you’re living in Thailand. If you’re holding a non-Thailand passport, it can be done although technically you don’t qualify for the refund if you reside in Thailand 180 days or more. However, the VAT refund office does not cross check your immigration status. You can claim the refund in cash at the airport on your way out.
950 SGD is a good price although I would check in Bangkok with AV Camera, Fotofile and Sunny Camera. Fotofile tends to be a bit higher but will come down. I think you can match the Singapore price in Bangkok or at least get close to it with the VAT refund.
In the worst case scenario, you may pay 26000 thb for the 500D but that local dealer and warranty is very valuable. For example, I bought a D700 earlier in the year from a local dealer. After a couple of weeks, the electronics failed. I took it back to the shop and they replaced it in 15 minutes. Try that with a camera bought abroad. I will buy lenses abroad (if the price is right) as lenses rarely fail however I tend to buy my cameras in Bangkok.

Thx Leo, yep i can’t claim a tax refund as I’m holding a Non immigrant B visa (tax refund is for tourist)
So maybe better I buy it in Bangkok There is some place where get get good deal (Zeer shopping mall RANGSIT close to futur park)
I am not sure that the shop in Singapore are license dealer…. if it’s to save on 1 or 2,000THB…. if over than 5,000THB than maybe I think again
Are you Thai or Singaporean?

For the price difference you’re better off buying in Thailand. Peace of mind is important. I’m neither Thai or Singaporean. I’m American and have lived in Bangkok for 11 years.

The staff at the VAT refund desk never check your immigration status. They verify your passport number, name etc. I suppose there’s always a slight risk they might question your VAT refund request. However I’ve heard of this occurring.

I am wondering if i can buy a 32inch sony bravia LCD Tv from singapore airport and get it checked in for my connecting flight. Also if it is not too much trouble would you let me know the price range of the LCD tv.

HI Neha,
Sorry I can’t help as I’ve never looked to see if they had tv’s of that size at the airport. Although I could be wrong, I don’t believe this size would be something they would keep in stock as they would rarely sell sets of this size. And then you would have the headache of trying to check in the televison while in transit. As far as pricing is concerned, I just don’t know. Sorry Neha.

December 22, 2009 at 9:50 pm
If the camera is in stock, the price with kit lens should be around 1000 Singapore dollars. The 450D has been replaced by the 500D so supply should be limited. There is at least one camera shop in each of the three terminals. Each is quite easy to find. Check the map or consult with the information counter.

You might check the Apple Store for the Ipad and Iphone. It’s located at Wheelock Place on Orchard. You could check with the mobile providers however they would require a service contract. Re VAT refund check this out. http://sg.ksdb.com/429414.page Briefly the VAT refund is 5% and you receive the refund at the airport. Make sure you get the proper VAT refund form from the store. Fill it out. At the airport, have customs check out your purchases. There are signs to point the way. If the purchase is checked in, then show them the products before checking in. If the products are hand carry, you can have them inspected after customs. After that, you take the documents to the refund desk and you will get the refund on the spot. There are signs everywhere.
Re camera, check John 3:16 at Funan Centre or Cathay Photo at nearly Peninsula Plaza.

Hi Leo
I ve been reading here your advices to many people. Could you maybe give me one about buying a 5d mark 2 from Bangkok? I intend to check AV photo, photofile and sunny camera. I am Turkish and will be in Thailand for a week only. Do I have a chance to get the VAT back from the airport when flying home?
hakan
January 27, 2011 at 4:37 pm
I would recommend that you check several shops including the ones you mention. AV has some of the best prices in Bangkok. Sunny at MBK is not bad. You should also check Fotofile at MBK. Key is to know your prices.
There are shops at fortune tower that sell new gray market cameras from the US. They can be considerably cheaper. We’re talking around 200-300 USD cheaper although the final price may depend on your bargaining. If you buy there make sure they offer vat refund.
Check out Fotofile.net for a good reference point. AV should be cheaper. And fortune tower even cheaper than that.
You can receive cash back at the airport. Of it you want, they can credit your charge card. And the VAT refund is seven percent. Be sure and pick up the forms from the shop where you buy the cameras.
Good luck,
Leo

Went on vacation in KL and on our way out I saw a Canon Kiosk selling a Canon 550D kit for RM2588 with 1 year warranty at the KLIA airport. When I got to Singapore, I curiously asked a store at the Lucky Plaza and was quoted SGD945. However, I’ve read some horrible stories at Lucky Plaza moreso electronic items. Some reputable stores along Orchard sells the 550D at SGD1199.
Would you happen to know the price of the Canon 550D kit at a trustworthy store you know? I’m from the Philippines, would I get a tax refund at the airport? Thank you in advance.

The last time I checked the 5d is available. Don’t know the price however don’t expect any discount. Duty free means nothing. Leo.

Each of the three terminals have an electronics shop. You can try the one in the terminal you’re transiting. Good luck. Leo

Hi. I shall be in Singapore in the coming days and I’m planning to buy a Digital Camera Sony CyberShot HX9V and an Xbox elite+ kinect. Please advise if the price at the duty free airport compares favourably with shops in Singapore and if not please advise urgently the reliable shops in Singapore to buy such items.
Thx

I’ve not seen the ipad2 at Changi. Too bad you’re not transiting Bangkok. The airport there has plenty of stock.
